About me

I'm Michael Tamburri, the founder of BorrowBase. I built this app for two simple reasons.

First, I looked around my house and realized I own a lot of gear that simply sits unused — power tools, a projector, camping equipment, ski gear — all gathering dust. I didn't want to sell it, but I hated watching it go to waste when someone nearby could actually put it to use.

Second, I kept running into the opposite problem: needing a tent for a weekend camping trip, a projector for a backyard movie night, or a power tool for that last-minute renovation — and facing the same frustrating options. Drive to a rental store. Fill out paperwork. Pay more than the item is worth for something I'd use once. I just wanted to borrow it from someone down the street.

The gap — idle gear on one side, unmet needs on the other — is where BorrowBase started. A marketplace that turns your closet into a rental counter and your neighbor's garage into a hardware store. And because every exchange involves real items and real money between strangers, we treat safety, security, and privacy as the foundation. Verified identities, secure payments, and transparent item protection are built into every transaction. Not features we added later. The starting point.
